Open SourceLanguage Learning App in React NativeNigeria

Wayword is our open-source React Native app for people who have moved somewhere new and want to learn the language from their own days, not from a textbook. Photograph a street sign, a menu or a letter and Claude reads it, says what it means, explains the parts that are hard to guess and picks out the words worth keeping. Each word becomes a card tied to the photo it came from, practised offline until it sticks.

01 The brief
Language apps teach the same phrase lists to everyone, while a newcomer needs the words on their own street, their landlord's letter and the menu at the corner caf茅. The app had to read real photos reliably, keep the learner's words private on the phone, and still call Claude safely from an open-source client without shipping an API key or letting a modified app change how Claude behaves.
02 Our approach
An Expo app in TypeScript with Expo Router, native tabs and native headers, light and dark mode, running in Expo Go with no native build.
Snap uses Claude's vision and structured output to return the text, a translation, an explanation and three to six words to keep, each with meaning, pronunciation and an example.
Practice runs SM-2 spaced repetition fully offline in SQLite; Talk rehearses real situations with Claude playing the other person, and a weekly story is written from the words kept that week.
A Supabase edge function holds the API key, builds every prompt on the server and enforces per-user, per-network and daily project limits in one locked database call.
03 Outcomes
Concrete results, not promises. Each line is something that exists and works today.
Open source on GitHub under the MIT licence
Words, photos and practice stay on the phone, kept apart per account
CI runs type checks, lint, tests and expo-doctor on every push
