1. Who exactly will work on my project?
Many agencies win the deal with senior people, then hand the actual build to junior contractors you have never met. Ask who writes your code, who designs your screens, and whether they are full-time members of the team or subcontractors brought in for the job.
The answer you want is a single team that owns the work from start to finish. When design, development, and deployment all sit under one roof, there are no handoffs where context gets lost and no finger-pointing when something breaks.
2. How will I know what I am paying before you start?
A moving price is the most common software horror story. The quote looks reasonable, but each change creates a new invoice, which raises the final amount to double what you planned.
Ask for fixed pricing agreed before any work begins, tied to a clearly defined scope. You should know the price and what it includes on day one. If a team cannot commit to a number, it usually means they have not thought hard enough about your project yet.
3. How often will I see real progress?
"We will update you" is not a process. Status reports are easy to write and easy to fake. Working software is not.
Ask how often you will see the actual product running. A good team works in short sprints, usually two weeks, and shows you a live demo at the end of each one. You see real progress, you catch the wrong turns early, and you are never surprised at the end.
4. What happens to my code and my data?
This is the question most owners forget, and the one that protects them most.
Ask who owns the code when the project ends (the answer should be you), whether it comes documented, and how your customers' data is protected. Strong teams build security in from the first commit: access controls so people only see what they should, an audit trail on sensitive actions, and private, signed access to files. If security sounds like an afterthought in the conversation, it will be an afterthought in the product.
5. What happens after launch?
Launch is not the finish line; it is the moment real users arrive and real issues surface. A team that disappears at launch leaves you stranded exactly when you need them.
Ask what support looks like afterward: who you call, how fast they respond, and whether there is a clear plan for monitoring, updates, and fixes. The best answer is a named point of contact and agreed response times, so you are never wondering whether anyone is still there.
